Adolescent orphans are a high risk group for HIV in Africa.  Explanations and interventions are often focused on reducing sexual risk among adolescents.  However these results show that maternal transmission is the predominant pathway of HIV transmission among orphaned adolescents.   The results from this study are important in directing program attention toward reducing maternal transmission and on testing and treating undiagnosed HIV among adolescents.
