Many agencies and organizations are shifting towards a systems approach to establish and strengthen comprehensive child protection efforts. A systems approach turns the focus from single issues to a comprehensive system-wide approach to address multiple issues, such as child labor, institutionalization, HIV/AIDS, child trafficking and street children. This paper is a literature review of existing system efforts with the effort of expanding the application of system thinking in the context of child protection. Highlighted in this paper are the essential elements of a systems approach to child protection that policymakers and program designers may find useful in addressing protection needs of children.
