Antiretroviral Therapy for HIV Infection in Infants and Children: Towards Universal Access

January 1, 2010
Organization: World Health Organization

Although the most effective approach to reducing pediatric HIV is by reducing mother-to-child transmission, for those born with HIV, chances of survival beyond the second year increase dramatically with diagnosis and treatment within the first year of life. This document, developed by the WHO, contains stand-alone treatment guidelines that serve as a framework for identifying first- and second-line ARV treatments. This framework may be used to support national responses for the care of infants and children living with HIV. Key recommendations for targets are detailed in this paper. Advisory boards, national AIDS program managers and policymakers working on HIV care strategies in resource-limited countries may find this document useful in providing a foundation for policies and programs.
