January 1, 2009
Organization: United Nations Children's Fund, Overseas Development Institute

This report focuses specifically on one type of social protection mechanism – social assistance in the form of cash transfers – and explores how this can contribute to addressing specific risks and vulnerabilities faced by children in the region. The few cash transfer programmes that exist in the West and Central Africa region are small scale pilot schemes. The report outlines challenges in design and implementation as well as cost and capacity implications for scaling up.
