The key to sustainable support for children affected by HIV and AIDS is community ownership of interventions. There is little community-based systematic documentation of the effectiveness, strengths and challenges of information systems for programs that support children. Community-based management information systems (CBMIS) is an approach to decentralize and strengthen these interventions. CBMIS allows communities to develop indicators, collect information and apply the data in decision making. This research paper assesses how communities can use data to direct action to improve child wellbeing. A series of community, program and global level recommendations are made and findings are included in lessons learned.
