Human Capacity Within Child Welfare Systems: The Social Work Workforce in Africa

Sustainability of programs that assist abused, neglected and exploited children are dependent on the strength of the local social work workforce and welfare sector. This study aims to inform stakeholders on challenges and opportunities in strengthening and building the child welfare sector within Africa – with an emphasis on the social work workforce. Major findings around legal and policy framework, child welfare and the practice of environment, and social work education and training are discussed in detail. Also included in this report are opportunities for quality improvement of social work education ; workforce development and curriculum design models for psychosocial support programming; and legitimizing of the social work profession. This study concludes with recommendations for the way forward.
