Measuring the Determinants of Childhood Vulnerability

“This report details a study aimed at identifying predictors of child vulnerability in the context of HIV and AIDS. The authors argue that the definition of ‘vulnerability’ derived from previous studies does not
adequately capture vulnerability. Additionally, programs for orphans and vulnerable children have broadened their focus to both children affected by AIDS as well as other equally needy children. This study uses data from eleven household surveys collected between 2005 and 2008 under the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, the Demographic and Health Survey, and the AIDS Indicator Survey. The authors utilized bivariate and multivariate methods. The most powerful and consistent factors associated with child vulnerability were household wealth, a child’s living arrangement, and household adult education. The authors discuss the limitations of the study as well as its implications for OVC case management, monitoring and evaluation, and program design.”
