Decades of research have shown devastating individual and household vulnerabilities due to the links between socioeconomic status and HIV. This brief provides an overview of the current evidence on the links between poverty, food insecurity, HIV vulnerabilities and the impacts of AIDS. Causes and impacts of the combination of HIV and poverty are discussed in detail. This paper focuses mainly on Eastern and Southern Africa due to the region’s high prevalence rates, food insecurity and poverty.
