It is recognized that the HIV pandemic negatively impacts more than the individuals, but also families and their children. To support these vulnerable children, this paper pushes for a holistic approach to child and social protection. This advocacy brief approaches social protection as an overarching framework that focuses on the support of vulnerable children living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Social transfers are highlighted as a key component in the protection, care and support of vulnerable children. This brief emphasizes the combination of social transfers with essential comprehensive support services and policies, including family support, child protection, alternative care, support policies and livelihoods promotion. The conclusion of this brief contains recommendations for moving forward, as well as current opportunities and challenges.
