This research brief from the Transfer Project compiles evidence on the impacts of cash transfers on a variety of measures, both at the individual and community level. The report is based on evidence drawn from the government-run cash transfer programs of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The cash transfer programs that were studied included both conditional and unconditional cash transfer programs. Results differed from country to country based on the amount and predictability of the cash transfer payments. Other factors such as strong messaging around caring for children also produced effects on how the transfer money was spent.
