This study presents the results from video documentation of 33 children receiving their ART medication in order identify contextual and medication-based barriers and facilitators to ART adherence. Results suggest that caregivers tend to store the medication outside of view, possibly as a result of stigma, and that food is rarely given before a dose is administered. In addition, results highlight misunderstandings by caregivers related to how to accurately measure the liquid medication. To combat these barriers, caregivers’ knowledge of the medication regimen should be monitored regularly by adherence counselors or relevant healthcare staff. These counselors and staff should also receive regular follow-up training on this topic.
